Kindness Turns a Grand Ole Opry Dream into Reality.

Posted on March 24, 2016 by Joanna Gaston

Hey everyone! I know it's been a while as things have been really busy over here, but I had to stop myself so that I could share this remarkable story with you. It involves a series of events that, by no coincidence, led to a group of people making one deserving person's dream of performing at The Grand Ole Opry come true. We were fortunate enough to be a part of this beautiful group of people with giving hearts. Many thanks to ARK Project Now, You Inspire, and Mickey Guyton for making this happen.

If you're into happy things and seeing people live out a dream they never thought was possible, then this video is a MUST WATCH. I'll let the video below explain the rest.

Thank You Thursday (The Oprah Magazine Edition)

Posted on October 15, 2015 by Joanna Gaston

This week has been one for the books...er magazines. After meeting Gayle King and having her try our cupcakes, I found out The Kind Cake was going to be featured in O Magazine's November issue. Since then it has been a rush to get A LOT of things handled before the magazine was set to hit stands. They wanted their readers to be able to access the cupcakes, so we had a month and a half to figure out how we would ship perishable cupcakes across the nation. Suffice it to say, I have learned so many lessons in the last month and a half.

This week I was headed up to the commercial kitchen and stopped by the grocery store on the way. There it was...Oprah was holding a massive turkey. It was the November issue! I went to a closed checkout lane, set the magazine down on the conveyer belt and started flipping through the pages and I saw it. All of the hard work, the hustle, the happy moments, (the not so happy moments)...it was ALL worth it. I felt overwhelming relief to finally see something that, before, I could only have faith in.

Today, and every day, I appreciate those who give people like me a chance. Sometimes the one chance you give another person is enough to change a life and for that, I'm forever thankful.

Thank You Thursday (the I know it's been a while edition)

Posted on September 24, 2015 by Joanna Gaston

Guys, I know it has been a long time since a Thank You Thursday post, but I promise I have good reasons.....really really good reasons why I have been MIA. Today, however, I did have some time to jot down a little something I felt led to write. So, here it goes.

When I was a kid, I was in the hospital and ER often. What am I saying? Even once is enough for me, but I digress. Being a kid (and adult for that matter) and sick in an unfamiliar environment is not ideal, but there were people there who made it bearable. Nurses. There is something to be said for not only their life-saving skills, but their compassionate, loving hearts for others. Now, some of my closest friends are nurses, my cousin is a nurse and I am VERY proud to announce that we are now adding "Thank a Nurse" to our rotation of acts of kindness that you will find under our cupcakes. Nurses are a gentle reminder that there are people who care and sincerely want the best for you and for that, I am so very thankful.

Thank You Thursday (Teacher Appreciation Edition)

Posted on May 07, 2015 by Joanna Gaston

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week so I felt it fitting to recognize someone who was, to me, a shining example of what it means to be an educator…my dad. Most of you reading this already know, but for those of you who don’t, here’s the scoop on my dad: he was Headmaster at my school, a former football coach and was, of course, a teacher. He cared about his students and his faculty…really cared about them. I saw this firsthand. He was the first to arrive at school and the last to leave at day’s end. (I should know, because he was my ride, ha!)

I vividly remember a time when he was teaching and getting the kids ready for state testing. It was late at night, which wasn’t unusual for Dad when it came to work. He was sitting at the breakfast table, only you wouldn’t have recognized the surface as a table, rather, a blanket of papers. His method of teaching transcended the classroom into our home where he would prepare for hours, sacrificing time and rest, to ensure the kids were armed with all the cognitive tools needed for those dreaded [my word] state tests. I remember feeling so proud of him, really marveling at his dedication to the kids. This certainly wasn’t the only instance that Dad put others before himself, but it’s one that is forever etched in my memory because I not only saw the effort and care he put into the students’ learning experience, I felt it.

For all of the teachers out there who spend equal amounts of time in the classroom as they do working quietly behind closed doors to make this little world a lot better, THANK YOU. There are people out there who know what you go through and the sacrifices you make and I hope you know that one day you will be greatly rewarded for that.
